An Indie Auto-Reply
Last week, after I shared The Brilliance of the Auto-Reply Message as one of the favorites of the year, I was forwarded this auto-reply message, which appears automatically when Catherine Cusick, Member Relationship Manager with the ABA, is away from her email:

Thanks for your email —
I am out of the office until Tuesday, December 23, and will have limited Internet access while away. If your request is urgent, please feel free to reach out to one of my ABA colleagues.
I appreciate your patience!
I also appreciate your procrastination, if you are like me and haven’t finished (started?) holiday shopping. Luckily for us, there’s a map of nearby indie bookstores full of smart, thoughtful people who’ll know what on earth to get your second cousin.

I love how she links to indie stores when she’s away. If you have appropriate pages set up to handle last-minute shoppers, be sure to include links to them in your *own* auto-reply messages. Especially since you’re probably not away from the bookstore, but on the sales floor. An auto-reply message is appropriate for that, too.
