From the great minds at Hicklebee’s: seasonal previews
I like what Hicklebee’s in San Jose, CA, offers for parents and teachers. Spring previews! Author and Hicklebee’s co-owner, Valerie Lewis presents the best in new literature from a wide variety of publishers. Lewis divides the lists into two presentations: one for preschoolers and one for K-8 grade.
Lewis told me that Hicklebee’s offers the presentations every spring and fall. “We opened in 1979, and our first one was in the fall of that year. We’ve been doing them ever since,” she said.
Participant come from all over the region, as far away as San Francisco and Berkleley. When the presentations started drawing a full house, they began requiring a reservation.
Hicklebee’s will reserve places for $10. In exchange, participants receive a $10 coupon for any purchase at Hicklebee’s, the Book Buzz talk, an annotated list of the books discussed, and a chance in a drawing for special prizes.
“It’s a whiplash presentation,” said Lewis. “I present about 50 books in an hour and a half, both fiction and non-fiction.”
