“The Secret of Raven Point”
Jennifer Vanderbes’ new novel, The Secret of Raven Point, hits the shelves today. This historical novel is set in 1943, when the 17-year-old protagonist lies about her age and joins the military as a nurse in order to search for her brother missing overseas. The Secret of Raven Point is featured on the February IndieNext List.
I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of useful information I found at her website. Vanderbes includes recommended reading, images of WWII recruitment posters for nurses, and there’s even a page of archival photos depicting life in a field hospital. If you can post an image on social media that’s related to a specific book–an image that is not an author photo or book cover–it’s entertainment without the feeling of a hardsell.
Jennifer Vanderbes is the author of the novels Easter Island and Strangers at the Feast, and is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a New York Public Library Cullman Fellowship. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and Granta and has been translated into sixteen languages. She lives in New York City with her daughter.
