Bookclub Suggestions

Tuesdays in a bookstore are filled with excitement because of the new releases. It’s the day we change out displays, call customers with suggestions, and find room for these new titles.

We receive new paperback releases on Tuesday as well, but they never seem to garner the same attention or excitement. It’s a good idea to make note of the new paperbacks as you’re shelving, and then think about their bookclub potential. Even though it seems our bookclub programs can run on auto-pilot, we still need to hand sell to them.

Keep a database of the bookclubs that order books through your store, and give the appropriate leaders a call on Wednesdays. Yesterday I saw Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life, Carlene Bauer’s Frances and Bernard, George Saunders’s Tenth of December, and Sonia Sotomayor’s My Beloved World. Would any of these great books make good reads/discussions for your bookclubs? Give them a call.
