The Best of Summer: Books, Movies and Kids
You know I’m a fan of temporary book clubs. The fact that they have a scheduled beginning and end make them more like an authorless event than an ongoing program. And if you can schedule a temporary book club to coincide with a movie tie-in, you’re more likely to attract those who really want to read the books before the movie is released.
Summer is a great time to schedule these book/movie book clubs for young readers. They have more free time, they can choose what they want to read, and they have little patience waiting for the movie release date.
Watermark Books & Cafe in Wichita, KS, recently scheduled a temporary John Green Book Club. They’ve done something unique with the timing, because their first meeting to discuss The Fault in Our Stars is tonight… after the June 6 movie release date. But they’ve recognized that most fans of The Fault in Our Stars, if they haven’t read John Green’s backlist, will want to. So they’ve schedule discussions for all of his books in reverse order of publication.
It’s not too late to schedule similar events for your bookstore. Here are other movies based on books for young people schedule to be released later this summer.
On August 15, the movie adaptation of The Giver by Lois Lowry will be released, starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep.
Published in 1993, The Giver is often referred to as the original YA dystopian novel. It was a 1994 Newbery medal winner. The movie tie-in has it’s own website and Twitter handle.
I’ve included the original trailer for the movie below. If you’d like to embed this trailer in your site, here’s the code:

And on September 19, The Maze Runner based on the book by James Dashner will be released.
