Quick & Dirty Results: Annual Sale

Now that I’ve just pointed out that the way a survey question is phrased can affect the responses, rest assured that this is not the case with the Quick & Dirty Survey. My questions do not seek an opinion. Instead they ask yes/no questions about bookstore practices.

One such question asked: Do you have planned or annual sales?

93% responded YES

7% responded NO

A few of those who responded YES said that while they have sales every year, they are not planned.

The most popular planned sale occurs on New Year’s Day. Other frequent responses were after Christmas, pre-inventory, holiday open house, birthday/anniversary, and community sidewalk sales.

Some stores limit what’s on sale, like hardcovers, used books, or gift merchandise only. Some focus on the time of year: Spring Cleaning, 4th of July, Summer, and Black Friday. And some limit who can shop… such as “loyalty members only” sales.
