300 Seconds: Simplify Your Desktop

This is day 2 of Simplify Your Life Week, and today I recommend that you take 5 minutes to clean off your desktop. Not your physical desktop, but your electronic one.

Your computer’s desktop can be useful as a temporary holding location for files and shortcuts. But if you do not remove these shortcuts after they’re no longer needed, the desktop can become cluttered and your computer’s performance will suffer. If your desktop is cluttered with icons, it can become difficult to find exactly what you need.

Just like your physical desk, you can create file folders for programs or files you want to keep handy. For the files I can never seem to find, I created a folder titled, “Stop looking. It’s in here.”

If your desktop is already clean, then I suggest shifting this task to focus on your RSS feed or your podcast subscriptions. If you haven’t read or listened in a while, get rid of them.

Sometimes this electronic clutter can take up more “space” than we realize.
